After 10 days touring across few Indian cities, we finally arrived at our last destination, Delhi. Delhi is separated into 2 parts, the Old delhi and New Delhi. Since we only have less than 24 hours to spend here before flying back to Kuala Lumpur, we only managed to get around few places in New Delhi.
Arriving at the New Delhi train station from Agra via the Shatabdi Express took us about 2 hours. The Shatabdi was the fastest way to get between the 2 cities where if you travel by car, it would take a mere 4 hour ride. I spent the night at The Sun City hotel situated in Karol Bagh area. The surrounding atmosphere was not really pleasant as we arrived at night time.
Next morning, the driver that we had booked was already waiting for us outside the hotel in an “Ambassador” car. At first when the travel company told me that he will send an ambassador car, I thought that it was some luxury car used by the embassy but actually Ambassador was the model name from the car maker Hindustan motors.
Humaiyun’s Tomb. Our first stop was the Humaiyun’s Tomb, yet another UNESCO world heritage site. A cool mausoleum from the ancient Moghul dynasty. Humaiyun is actually the great grandfather of Shah Jahan, the mughal emperor who built the Taj Mahal. The area was quite big and I was surprised that there were not many visitors there.
a brief history about the tomb
Lotus Temple. Looking at the design, it looks like the temple was rightly named. There were lots of visitors when we arrived there. We didn’t spent much time there, snapping up a few pictures from distance and we left the place.
Had our lunch at Pindi restaurant somewhere not too far from the India Gate location. All the Indian traditional dishes were tasty there but it was pricey.
Outside the restaurant area, we were lucky to encounter a snake charmer that will play with his cobra for a small fee. One dude also approached us to sell us the Kamasutra book and they come in different languages! I decided to bought it as a wedding gift for my friend.. so I managed to bargain with the guy to get a good price.
Preseident’s Palace. The president palace is situated not far from the India gate area. It is surrounded by many government agencies building. It’s more like a smaller version of Putrajaya in Malaysia.
government complex beside the palace
India Gate. This monument was built in 1931. It was since became the national monument of India. Like the Gateway of India, security here was also tight with police officers seen almost at every corner.
Laksminarayan Temple. It was a beautiful temple built in honor of Hindu Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. We didn’t enter it’s compound, just snapped a few shots from outside.
Overall the time in Delhi was mostly spent by going sightseeing to the normal tourist attraction. There wasn’t enough time to visit the Old Delhi part. I guess there’s plenty of reason for me to come back to India again after all.
Its such a beautiful place esp the Taj Mahal. Though I have been here, plenty I have heard from my hubby who studied in Indian for a couple of year.s
yeah it was really great to visit India.. I’m thinking of the northern part if I had the chance to visit India again.. probably Srinagar & Ladakh area 🙂
