Earning my open water diver certification

It was the first time I set foot on an island situated in the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Before this I only heard stories about Perhentian Island from friends or read it in magazines. My trip this time was not the usual backpacking trip. This time I was there to obtain the PADI Open Water Divers License! Or in other words, a scuba diving license.

Perhentian is divided into two islands which are Perhentian Besar (Big island) and Perhentian Kecil (Small island). Both has great views and crystal clear waters.

Our dive center, Urban Island Divers was located in the big island and it was run by a local guy called Man. He was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay there. We were then introduced to Cesar, our instructor from Peru. He was the one who guided us throughout the course.

watching the videos

We had to go through the theory class and also the practical lesson. The theory part involves watching videos, reading the books and also sits for an examination. The videos and book part was the boring part though.

the system

We had to learn from A to Z that includes assembling the BCD to the gas tank and checking the regulator by ourselves. Getting into the water was the best part. Being the first time breathing through the regulator is kind of awkward for me but after a while I managed to get use to it.

Under the sea, we need to perform all the required moves in order to complete the course. Seriously I didn’t expect that much of stuff to be learn. Look at the video of us below the sea.

We need to complete 6 dives to permit us to get the license. The final dive was the best as we were allowed to explore further down.

Upon finishing all the 6 dives, we had to sit for the final theory examination. After we passed the exam, we were given the temporary dive card as the original card would be posted to us by PADI.

Now I’m officially a PADI open water diver!

Hi.. last time it cost me about RM1300 including food and accommodation in Perhentian.. it took me 3 days to finish the course.. basically u will be wearing your BCD all the time in the water.. it’s like a life jacket but u can inflate and deflate it.. so don’t worry if u can’t swim 🙂
