Bamboo rafting in Yangshuo

Last April we travelled to Yangshuo, a small town in China’s Guanxi province with #TravelholicAwesome members. This area is famous to tourist for its beautiful sceneries of mountains and rivers.  During our stay, we did not try the Li River Cruise, the one which most travel agents will bring you to. Moreover, during that time the water level went up and there has been some incident which lead to the closure of the Li river for all water activities including the cruise.

What we did was we try out Bamboo Rafting down another river in Yanghsuo, Yulong river. When arrived at the Yulong river pier, we got excited and can’t wait to get on the raft. There were scenes where locals trying to sell some plastic bags to protect your shoes from getting wet and also water guns. The usage of plastic bags to protect your shoes however was not recommended as it can get slippery and there were cases where people fell down because of it.

Not long after arriving at the pier, we were already on our raft. The raft comprises of 8 to 10 logs of bamboo and could accommodate 3 people including the rower. There’s a two-seat not so comfortable bamboo and metal chairs sitting on top of the raft plus some are also equipped with an umbrella.

The views during the ride were absolutely beautiful along the river! I just can’t stop clicking my camera. It’s like we were floating on one of the world’s most enchanting and lovely river landscape.

Along the way, there were a few small falls which our raft had to go through where we had to go down a few feet each one. A camera man was already waiting a few meters away to shoot your photo while going down the falls. The rower will stop the raft for a while at the floating platform and the guys there will tend to sell you the photos they just took. Just some advice for those who would like to buy the photos, there are a few falls more so do not buy the first one if your photo isn’t that nice. Oh ya, you could also bargain with them if you buy a few photos 🙂

Apart from the photo platform, there was another type of platform which is selling food along the way. Your rower will definitely stop at one of the stalls which sells items such as drinks, bbq fish, grilled corn and some other traditional delicacies. At this point, the seller will persuade you to buy some drinks for the rowers and yes, the price is higher than the one you buy on the streets.

The journey took us around 2 hours of floating on the raft. As we arrived at the finishing point, the van which picked us up at our hotel was already waiting there. Overall it was an exciting and quite peaceful (if u minus the food seller).
