Luwak Coffee: Interesting or Disgusting?

On the way back after visiting Kintamani area in the northern part of Bali, we stopped by a coffee plantation. It’s not just a normal coffee plantation, it produces Luwak Coffee. The luwak coffee or known as Kopi Luwak by the locals, is very popular in Indonesia, mainly in Sumatra & Java. Luwak coffee are actually normal coffee beans which have been eaten and excreted by the palm civet. Yes, the coffee are made of beans that came out of a civet’s poop!

As we walked into the plantation, we passed through the coffee tree and also a few other trees and plants such as cocoa and also vanilla. Locals said that the palm civet knew best about the coffee. They will select the best quality beans to eat. Therefore you will get coffee out of the best beans out there. That is why the Luwak coffee is considered one of the most expensive coffee in the world.

The owner showed to us one of the civet which they kept in a cage and later explains about the process of making the Luwak Coffee. It started with the process of the civet eating the coffee. Then after about a day and a half, the civet digest the beans and it will be defecated in clumps. The farmer will collect the “digested” beans and wash it. Finally the coffee beans are roasted and this is where the aroma comes up.

At the cafe area, he offered us a free tasting of their other products. This includes, Balinese coffee, Mocha, cinnamon, lemon and a few others. Yes the main purpose of this testing is to lure us to buy their products.

He did offered to us the Luwak Coffee for 50,000 rupees. Apparently some of us did try out the coffee and also bought a few packs back to Malaysia. For me the experience of learning about the process of Luwak Coffee is very interesting although it’s disgusting.

So what say you? would you try the Luwak Coffee?

Haha interesting entry, I bought a bag of Kopi Luwak and really like it despite its poop origins. Didn’t know the process of making it though until I chanced upon your blog. Nice to read stories of fellow Malaysian travellers 🙂
