Fremantle is a harbor city located south of Perth in the Western Australia region. Some said that it is a suburb of Perth but I found it as a city by itself. Fremantle is renowned for its architectural heritage, including a number of colonial-era buildings, port, and prisons. I’ve been to Fremantle twice, once during winter and once during summer. Below are my compilation of the places that u might want to check it out should u happen to visit Fremantle.
1) Fremantle Market
This market was said to be built in 1897. It is the place to discover should u be in Perth and Fremantle. U could find clothes, snacks, cookies, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as accessories, jewelries and much more. There are also plenty of souvenirs sold here but I found out that it is quite pricy. Talked to one of the shop owners there and she said that the high rental pretty much reflects the price there.
among the souvenirs sold at the market.. boomerang anyone?
2) Fremantle Prison
Located within walking distance from Fremantle Market, it is a former Australian prison turned into a tourist attraction. Similar to the Old Melbourne Gaol in Melbourne but it’s in a larger scale. It allows visitors to experience how prison life would be. For those looking for a more thrilling visit, they do offer a night tour.
3) E-Shed Market
Perhaps the best place to shop for souvenirs in Western Australia. This is the place to be if you’re looking for fridge magnets, printed t-shirts or even kangaroo soft toys. The price here is much cheaper than Fremantle market. I also did bump into one shop specialize in fridge magnets only.
4) Enjoy the street show and street arts
If you’re walking along the streets in Fremantle during weekends, there’s a high chance u would bump into guys doing street shows such as the fire show and also street singers.
5) Kaili’s Fish Market
This is an award winning tourist restaurant. Famously known for its fresh and tasty seafood dishes. Located at the Fishing Boat Harbour, it offers lots of choices ranging from grilled fish, fresh oysters, barbequed scallops to fish & chips flavored gelato.

6) Go Fishing
If u have extra time to spend, there are lots of fishing spots around Fremantle. Did saw a few guys successfully brought up some big catch. I tried fishing once by the dockyard but please don’t ask how many fish did I caught.
7) Visit the Museums
There are also plenty of museums around Fremantle for u to visit. Among them are the Maritime Museum, Energy Museum, Prison Museum, Army Museum and the shipwreck galleries.
OK, you got me hooked alright…
I’m interested to know more about the Fremantle Prison and what they did to the building…
u can go into the prison and feel for yourself how life in prison would be.. I blogged about the prison in melbourne before.. it is similar to this place
